ゼロ・ウェイストとは Let's talk about Zero Waste

先週の土曜日はニカさんをお招きし「ゼロ・ウェイスト」について考え、わたしたちの地球のために行動することの大切さについて学びました。また、自宅でもさっとできるニカさんお気に入りのおやつをいくつか紹介していただきました。コンビニで買ってゴミを増やすよりも、自宅でこしらえて持ち運べばその分のお小遣いだって節約できます。最後は、大きな風呂敷に思い思いの絵を描いて、自分だけの風呂敷を作りました。 たとえその一歩は小さくても、一人一人が意識を高めて行き、行動に移していくことは大切なことです。 少しずつ、出来るところから。 ニカさんの日々の行動から学ぶことがたくさんありましたね。大変実りのあるワークショップでした。 ニカさん、ありがとう

On Saturday, we were joined by Nika-san, who taught us about the Zero-Waste movement. We learned why it’s so important for us all to make the effort to save our environment, and how we can all make small changes to our daily lives to help make big changes to the world we live in. Nika-san also brought along some of her favourite snacks to show us how instead of wasting money and making more rubbish by getting snacks at a convenience store, we can make our own delicious treats, and bring them with us when we go out. Jobim Power! ジョビンパワー！

Sitting in pride of place, in the middle of our classroom, is the record player. It was one of the first things we bought when we started Deko Boko Eigo. Thanks to Mr. Imokawa generously lending us his classical records, we can shift between Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Albinoni, and more. Over the past two years we have enjoyed taking tea and learning English to a truly beautiful soundtrack.

This month I brought in an old bossa nova record by Antonio Carlos Jobim. I'm a big jazz fan, but in the past when I've played Glen Miller, the rhythm is too addictive and Kaolu has to remind me to stop dancing, so we tend to stick to classical, but Jobim is something else. The rhythm is catchy, but not intrusive, the singing is perfectly mellow, and the music itself flips between moods from song to song, so it never feels boring. Jobim is magic. Now, normally overly energetic children are sitting quietly, humming themselves, teatime is more civilized. A 4-year-old suddenly started singing,’Luizaaaaaa’, and during class time when asked for an example of what they like, an 8-year-old said proudly, ‘I like Jobim, and fruit!’

It’s the perfect end to a perfect day hearing our kids singing Águas de Março together as they beep out and say goodbye. What are you listening to at home?

デコボコ英語の教室、そのど真ん中にあるもの。それは、レコードプレーヤーです。開校前、どんな空間にしようかと考えていた際にまず二人で決めたのが、レコードプレーヤーでした。五百川さん（かおるの父）から好意で借りているクラシックミュージックのレコード、バッハ、ヘンデル、ヴィヴァルディ、アルビノーニなどなど、この二年間ティータイムや学習中にその美しい音色を子どもたちと楽しんでいます。 8月、ブラジルの作曲家アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンの古いレコードを買いました。私（ヒラリー）はジャズ好きなんですが、過去にグレン・ミラーをかけていた際、そのリズムにはまり、踊らざるにはいられなくなることに気づき、それ以来、クラシックミュージックのレコードだけをかけるようになっていたんです。でも、ジョビンは別格なようです。 とらえやすく邪魔にならないリズム、歌はとても落ち着いていて次々と展開が変わるので飽きることがありません。ジョビンマジック。 普段は元気いっぱいの子どもたちが静かに腰掛け、ハミングしながらティータイムを過ごすなんて、ものすごく洒落ています。 4歳児が突然’Luizaaaaaa’と歌い出したかと思えば、最近気に入っているものについて対話をしていた8歳の男の子の口からは、‘I like Jobim, and fruit!’ 格好よすぎて、どだなだず！ Águas de Marçoを歌いながらの「またね！」なんて素敵すぎる一日の終わり方です。みなさんはお家でどんな音楽を聴いていますか？

植物で蒸留水を作ろう An Introduction to Plant Extracting Techniques

笑顔が素敵なセラピストの矢萩梨和（やはぎりわ）をお招きしました。 アランビックを使って、月桃、くろもじ、レモングラスとわき水から蒸留水を抽出し、フレグランススプレーを作りました。またペパーミントやフユザンショウなどのエッセンシャルオイルの香りを比べ、自分なりのミニアロマブックを作りました。一つの香りをとってもそのイメージが「夏」「歯磨き粉」「キャンディー」そして「おばあちゃん」とそれぞれで面白いもんです！ りわさん、ありがとうございます！

This morning we were joined by the magical Riwa-san! Surrounded by Kuromogi, Lemon Grass, Shell Ginger, and a beautifully shiny copper alembic, Riwa-san took us through the process of distilling essences and infusing them with natural spring water to make a gorgeous aromatic spray. We also sampled other essential oils and put together a small scent diary, making notes about how different scents make us feel. Isn't it funny how the same smell can bring up images of summer, toothpaste, candy, or even grandmothers depending on the person? Riwa-san, thank you for a wonderful experience!
