デコボコ英語の田んぼも稲穂が実り、稲刈りまであとやく1ヶ月となりました。

残暑が厳しいここ数日、汗だくになりながら「ヒエ」や「コナギ」などの雑草を取り除いています。先日は「カメムシ対策」で木酢液をまきました。これまた高瀬の友だちに手伝っていただきました。

そんな「高瀬の友だち」との出会いは今から約4年前のことでした。

翻訳の仕事を通じて、高瀬に獅子踊りを継承し続けている方々がいらっしゃることを知り、それをなんとか子どもたちと舞うことはできないかと、連絡をとりました。

高瀬の皆さんが舞う獅子踊りは「鹿楽招旭踊(からおぎあさひおどり)」。山形市指定無形文化財に指定されています。

この獅子踊り、楽譜もなければ踊り方を書き記したものもない、というのです。皆さん代々、親から子へと、舞い方、笛や太鼓での楽曲を語り継いできたのだそうです。そんな獅子踊りを数回のレッスンで子どもたちに伝えるのは難しいだろうと、子どもたちにその獅子踊りのお話をしていただくことにしました。

獅子踊りのお話と同時に「紅花づくり」についてもお話をいただき、その流れでデコボコ英語でも畑を借りて紅花を作ることになりました。

今年は高瀬で紅花を作り始めて4年目です。

獅子踊りのことを教えてくれた宇治川さん、紅花づくりの先生井上さん、田んぼの先生村上さん。皆さんいつも本当にありがとうございます。

There's only about a month left before we harvest this year's Deko Boko rice. I've spending these last, sweltering summer days weeding out the 'Hie' and 'Konagi' from the paddy, and sprinkling wood vinegar to keep the stink bugs away. Of course, I could never do all this by myself, I'm always helped out by my Takase friends.

It's been 4 years since we randomly met these guys, all because of a single translation job. As we worked through pages about the history of Yamadera, we learned about a small group of people in Takase who are keeping alive the traditional 'Shishi Odori' (Lion Dance), and we were keen to find out if they would could convince them to come to Deko Boko and teach it to our students. The style of Shishi Odori that is danced in Takase is known as the Karaogi Asahi Odori, and is considered to be a precious part of Yamagata's intagible cultural heritage.

There is no sheet music for the accompanying flute and drums, and no written instructions for how to perform this dance, instead it has been passed down orally from generation to generation. It would clearly be impossible to teach our children how to even try this very unique dance in a singe hour, so instead we asked if they would be willing to come and talk about the dance instead. Somehow, through a conversation about traditional dancing, we started talking about Benibana (Safflower), another Takase speciality, and before we knew it, we had been offered the chance to borrow some land and try our hands at growing Benibana with the professionals! That was 4 years ago, time really does fly...

デコボコ英語では2020年から、山形市高瀬で田んぼを借りて米づくりをしています。

米づくりを始めた一番の理由は、子どもたちと「お米」について学びたいと思ったからです。

毎日口にする「お米」。一体どうやって食卓までやってくるのか、それを一から経験してみたかったんです。やるからには無農薬で、田植えも稲刈りも手作業でと決めていました。

田んぼを借りて、と言っても、全ての作業工程を手伝ってくださる「高瀬の友だち」がいるからできることです。稲作りから、田植えの準備、田植え枠や除草機の手配、イノシシ除けの電柵はりや稲刈り後に必要な機械を使わせてもらったりと「高瀬の友だち」のおかげで美味しいお米を作ることができています。また、有機農業をされている伊藤さんからもたくさんアドバイスをいただきました。

一年目の去年は、コロナ禍で子どもたちと一緒に作業することは叶いませんでしたが、今年は田植えからみんなの力を借りることができました。

現在は、稲の成長を観察しながら除草機を押しているところです。

In 2020, Deko Boko Eigo borrowed land in Takase and started growing rice.

Our main reason for doing this was to teach our students from A to Z, all about the grain that we eat pretty much every day. We wanted to teach them how it gets from the paddy to the table, and we wanted to do it without pesticides.

There's no way we could do any of this without our wonderful Takase friends. The old pro farmers who have taken us through every process, from making the seedlings, preparing the land, and arranging the planting frames, to setting up the electric fences to protect our crop from wild boars, and lending us all the machines and tools that we need.

Thanks to our friends in Takase we gathered a delicious harvest last year. We also relied heavily on the advice of Mr. Ito, a good friend and revered local organic farmer.

Sadly, in 2020 we weren't able to invite the children to help us plant and harvest because of the virus, but this year, we had many of our young friends getting their hands, and everything else dirty planting the field!

These days, I'm using the weeder and watching the growth of the young rice plants. Stay tuned for more Takase adventures!

色 / Colour

皆さんは、何色が好きですか？

英語レッスンの序盤で必ず触れる簡単な質問ですが、「色」について話そうとしたら、基礎学習の時間だけでは到底足りないんですよね。

今月の学習テーマは「色」。

サブテーマの一つが「虹色」＋「レインボーフラッグ（虹の旗）」。

「この旗見たことある？」

「LGBTQってどういう意味だろう？」

「どうしてレインボーフラッグは、大切なんだろうね？」

もう一つのサブテーマは「肌の色」。

それぞれが鏡と向き合い「自分は何色？」「あなたは何色？」と問いかけ

世界中の美しい肌の色について考え、インクルーシブの大切さを学んでいます。お互いに敬意を表し、親切な態度をとることは、デコボコ英語の考え方の中でもとても大切な事の一つです。

素晴らしい絵本や、ビデオ、工作やみんなで話し合うことで、今回の学習テーマの「色」は、たくさんのことを私たちに教えてくれています。

ご自宅でそんな話をとする機会を持つ時は、この絵本たちをお勧めします。

What colour do you like?

It's a simple question, one of the first we tackle in English class, and yet these days there are so many important themes connected with colour, just covering the basics doesn't feel like it's enough.

This month in the classroom, when we learn about the colours of the rainbow, we introduce the rainbow flag. Have you seen this flag before? What does LGBTQ mean? Why is the rainbow flag important?

We also take a look in the mirror and ask ourselves, 'What colour am I? What colour are you?' We think about why there are so many beautiful skin colours around the world, and learn the importance of inclusiveness.

Living in Japan, these are questions that we often forget to ask, but particularly as English learners, Deko Boko Eigo believes it's important for our children to understand how to navigate the global community with respect and kindness. We are excited to explore these new themes through story books, videos, crafts, and discussions. If you want to start a conversation at home, we recommend the following books:
