イラストレーションと年賀状ワークショップ Illustration and Nengajo Workshop

来年平成31年の干支である「イノシシ」をモチーフに、年賀状を自分たちでデザインするというワークショップを、杉の下意匠室のお二人がリードしてくださいました。子どもたち自身が描いたイラストや文字をどのようにデザインし、一枚のはがきサイズに収めるか。また、これだ！と納得のいくものを作り上げることができるか。お二人から助言をいただきながら、それぞれが試行錯誤し、作業していました。最後は、自分の作品のどこがポイントなのかを発表し、お二人からフィードバックをいただくという大変実りのあるワークショップでした。芸術の秋を感じるそんな素敵な時間でしたね。杉の下意匠室の鈴木さん、小関さん、ありがとうございました！できあがりが楽しみです！ Our good friends Mr. Koseki and Mr. Suzuki of Suginoshita Ishoushitsu came to Deko Boko Eigo to give us a lesson in design, just in time to create the perfect New Year's postcard (Nengajo). We first talked about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, in particular next year's animal, the wild boar, and then we got down to designing. We drew many different kinds of wild boar, and then chose our favourite parts from all of our drawings to put together the final image.

Once we had decided on our final project, Mr. Koseki and Mr. Suzuki photographed and put a few digital touches onto each design to give us a rough idea of the final product. Finally, everyone talked about the main focus of their own designs and got some feedback from the masters.

Everyone did an amazing job, and created some truly lovely Nengajo for their family and friends. Thank you all for coming, especially our wonderful and cool special guests, for such a great designing experience!

七日町でトリックオアトリーティング Trick or Treating in Nanukamachi

ハロウィーンにちなんだ絵本を読み、みんなのスプーキースイッチをオンにして、週末の七日町へハロウィーンパレードに繰り出しました。もちろん目的はTrick or Treat!! じゃらんじゃらん・タリーズコーヒー七日町店・タマルヤ・nicoドーナツ山形店・栗の実洋品店・カフェヒマラヤ・無印良品七日町店・十一屋本店・カメラショップサンコー堂の皆さんのご協力で最高に楽しい思い出ができました。本当にありがとうございました。 This Halloween, we all got dressed up to the spooky nines, and took to the streets of Nanukamachi. We first gathered at Deko Boko Eigo, and listened to a few scary stories to get us in the mood, and then we headed out. We visited nine local shops with a friendly, 'Trick or Treat!' and got an impressive haul: candy from Bali, cookies from Nepal, ceramic buttons, DIY postcards, and a whole assortment of other treats.

We can't thank our local friends enough for helping put on such a great event: Jalan Jalan, Tully's Nanukamachi, Tamaruya, Nico Donuts, Kuri no Mi, Cafe Himalaya, Mujirushi Nanukamachi, Juichiya, and Sankodo. We are forever grateful for your kindness and holiday spirit! As for our students, your costumes, were absolutely amazing, we hope you had a sufficiently scary and enjoyable time! どんな味？- How does it taste?

山形大学の大森桂さんをお招きし「五味-甘味、酸味、塩味、苦味、うま味」について、体験を通し英語で学んでいただきました。五つの味ステーション、たとえば「Umamiステーション」では「かつおだし・昆布だし・いりこだし・本だし・出汁なし」の五つの味噌汁をためしてもらい、その違いについて考える。また「Sweetステーション」では「和三盆・黒糖・白砂糖」の三種類で作ったカップケーキを食べ、その違いにて考えてみるなど、様々なアクティビティを通して五味について考えた実りのある時間でした。 We were thrilled to welcome back Dr. Omori to Deko Boko Eigo, as she lead us around the classroom exploring each of the 5 tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. Through games and experiments, we discovered the different kinds of umami in dashi, taste tested miso from all over Japan, learned the perfect recipe for an all natural cold remedy, tried a truly bitter dark chocolate and compared it with other high cacao content chocolates, and finally discovered how baking with different kinds of sugar changes the final cake. We then talked about everything together, and discovered that everyone has different favourites. It was a wonderful experience and we are very grateful to Dr. Omori, and to our wonderful students, who made the workshop so enjoyable. Thank you!
